Recreation and Weather

Recreation begins in your own back yard at Sugar Pointe. Most homes and building sites have direct access to miles of walking trails that wander through our community.  Rhododendron and mountain laurel grace the way; mountain vistas surprise at intervals. Majestic trees untouched for centuries provide a cool canopy; gurgling streams and the call of birds are the only sounds you will hear.

More challenging hiking trails can be accessed directly from Sugar Pointe, or from the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway. Golfing is found minutes away in the Village of Sugar Mountain and at more than a half dozen nearby municipal and semi-private courses. Sugar Mountain has beautifully groomed tennis courts and a first class pro shop. Fly fishing is fabulous along the Elk and Watauga Rivers.

Snow skiing and related activities abound at Sugar Mountain Resort, and on nearby Beech Mountain and Seven Devils. The ski bus stops at the entrance to Sugar Pointe on holidays and weekends, providing free transport to the lodge at the base of the mountain.

Gem mining is a great opportunity to explore North Carolina’s rich mineral heritage. Whitewater rafting, kayaking and tubing excursions leave daily from Sugar Mountain and Banner Elk.  Sail and power boating on nearby Watauga Lake with its 104 miles of virtually undeveloped shoreline provides a relaxing outing. The Virginia Creeper Trail, one of the world’s premier easy biking excursions, is a must for young and old.  More challenging mountain biking can be found right on Sugar Mountain.

Grandfather Mountain with its mile-high swinging bridge provides a spectacular vista from many Sugar Pointe home sites.  Open in every season, Grandfather Mountain is a globally recognized nature preserve; the highest peak in the Blue Ridge Mountain range.
